Updated: Jun 14, 2023
Laundry detergent sheets are a revolutionary new way to do your laundry that's taking the world by storm. These innovative sheets are changing the way people think about their laundry routine, with a convenient and mess-free solution that makes doing laundry easier and more eco-friendly than ever before. Unlike traditional liquid or powder detergents, laundry detergent sheets come in a thin, lightweight sheet that dissolves completely in water, leaving no residue or waste behind. They're easy to use, eco-friendly, and effective, making them the perfect choice for anyone looking to simplify their laundry routine without sacrificing quality or performance.
In this post, I will be testing Tru Earth Laundry detergent sheets to see how well they clean regular stains like wine, grass, or tomato.
About Tru Earth
In today's world, it's become more important than ever to take care of the environment and make conscious decisions that lead to a more sustainable future. But what if we told you that you could do that while also making a positive impact on people in need? That's exactly what a company did during the challenging year of 2020 when household supplies were in high demand. Not only did they provide eco-friendly products that work just as well as traditional options, but they also donated them to food banks, maternity programs, and local women's shelters. By choosing their products, you're not only helping the planet, but you're also helping those who need it most. It's a small decision that can make a big difference, and it's proof that we can all work towards a better future by taking small steps in the right direction.
Impact
Tru Earth is the epitome of eco-friendliness and innovation, proudly made in Canada. Their product is a game-changer in the world of laundry detergents, with packaging that's completely plastic-free and an ultra-lightweight design that's 94% lighter than the leading detergent in the market! This means that each pack of Tru Earth can power through an incredible 32 loads, all while leaving a significantly smaller carbon footprint. But it's not just about the packaging; Tru Earth eco strips are a testament to the creators' commitment to sustainability and the environment. By reducing transportation pollution, plastic waste, and resources used in making jugs, Tru Earth is helping to save the planet, one load at a time. Plus, their compostable cardboard sleeve doubles as a shipping envelope, making it a truly zero-waste product. With approximately 1 billion laundry jugs discarded in the United States each year, it's more important than ever to make conscious choices like Tru Earth, which is not just a better option for your laundry, but for the planet as a whole.
Ingredients
Just like any other detergent, also tru earth has a bunch of ingredients to ensure its cleaning power. Below is an overview of the ingredients used and why they are used. Most are completely safe and biodegradable but the last 2 ingredients are not.
Vegetable Glycerin & Glycereth cocoate: plant-derived, biodegradable water softener
Starch: plant-derived biodegradability booster
Sodium Gluconate: plant-derived and food-grade, biodegradable water softener that prevents soil from resettling on fabric after it has been removed during washing
Cocamido propyl betaine: coconut oil derived, biodegradable surfactant and foam booster
Lauryl dimethyl amine oxide: plant-derived, biodegradable non-ionic surfactant (cleaning agent) and foam stabilizer
Caprylyl Glucoside, Octyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Sulfonic Choride, C14-16-alkane hydroxy and C14-16-alkene, Sodium Sulfate: Biodegradable Surfactants
Water: Universal solvent
Potassium Sorbate: Food-grade preservative that also occurs naturally in nature.
Polyvinyl alcohol: a water-soluble synthetic polymer that thickens and stabilizes the sheets. More than 5% is toxic to fish and it biodegrades slowly.
Mineral Oil/Paraffin oil: Used in manufacturing as a processing aid. (not an active product ingredient)
Overall, it's free of chlorine bleach, a notorious irritant that can damage fabrics over time. And if that's not enough, it's been independently tested and certified to be free of 1,4-dioxane, a toxic compound commonly found in laundry detergents and is known to be a carcinogenic. With Tru Earth, you can enjoy clean, fresh-smelling clothes without compromising your health or the planet's well-being as it is paraben-free, phosphate-free, dye-free, bleach-free, and 1,4-dioxane-free laundry detergent!
How to use Tru Earth
Tru Earth Laundry detergent sheets are extremly easy to use.
Top-load washer: place the strip directly inside the washer.
Front-load washer: place the strip in the detergent dispenser (tear the strip into smaller pieces if it doesn’t fit).
Do Tru Earth Laundy Sheets Work?
I have tested these laundry detergent sheets with tomato, grass, and wine stains.
Tomato Stains: Almost all of the tomato residue has been removed but the red part of the tomato is quite aggressive and this pigment is known to remain in fibers even after multiple washing which can be seen here. Some orange residue is left but there was no tomato smell.
Wine stains: There was a faint stain left in the wipe but only if the light felt just right. Tru earth laundry detergent sheets also completely removed the smell so overall, this was a good one.
Grass stains: Grass stains are notorious to remove and it wasn’t a surprise to me that these laundry strips couldn’t remove completely. It did get rid of the grass/earth smell but some of the stains were still clearly visible.
So overall I think Tru Earth Laundry detergent sheets did a great job at cleaning these difficult stains. Even though there are still stains visible it didn’t perform worse compared to regular laundry detergent. Conventional detergent also has a hard time removing these stains and these sheets performed similarly which is all I hoped for.
Price per load
The price of Tru Earth ranges greatly as a small package has a higher price per load compared to a subscription of large packages. Overall, a small package of 8 loads will cost about €1,10 per load while a subscription of a 384 loads pack will cost you €0,38 per load.
Most people choose a box of 32 or 64 loads which will cost about €0,76 or €0,69 per load.
Why low suds?
If you're looking for a better way to clean your clothes and save energy at the same time, then a low-sudsing detergent is the way to go. While many conventional detergents produce lots of bubbles, the truth is that bubbles don't clean your clothes. It's the saponified molecules in the water that do the real cleaning work. That's why using a low-sudsing detergent like Tru Earth can be more effective in getting your clothes clean. Not only does it save energy, but it's also better for high-efficiency (HE) machines. Regular detergent can cause these machines to repeatedly rinse laundry, wasting both water and energy. So, by using a low-sudsing detergent, you're not only reducing your environmental impact, but you're also making your laundry routine more efficient and effective. It's a win-win situation!
Can you use Tru Earth Laundry detergent sheets on cloth diapers?
Their website states that you can use it on cloth diapers and that many mothers do so however, I don’t recommend it. Eco-friendly detergents are known to have less cleaning power compared to big-brand detergents. For your clothes that got a bit dusty or sweaty from wearing, laundry detergents sheets will work fine but cloth diapers are much dirtier.
If cloth diapers are not cleaned properly, this dirt may build up over time which not only impacts the absorption of your diapers but also may affect your baby's skin. Therefore I recommend a different detergent for your cloth diapers.
Does it work in cold water?
Tru Earth Laundry detergent is effective in both warm and cold water which can make your laundry routine even more eco-friendly. By choosing a cooler washing cycle, you save lots of energy and save money as well.
Is it septic tank safe?
According to their website, Tru Earth Eco-Strips are biodegradable and safe for septic and grey water.
Is it vegan?
Tru Earth laundry detergent is a vegan product. As you could read above in the ingredients list, no animal-derived ingredients are used and no testing on animals has been conducted by Tru Earth or the ingredient suppliers.
In conclusion, Tru Earth laundry detergent sheets are a game-changer in the world of laundry. These eco-friendly, low-sudsing sheets make doing laundry easier, more efficient, and better for the environment. Not only are they incredibly effective at cleaning your clothes, but they also help you save energy and reduce waste. Tru Earth is committed to making a positive impact on the world, and its laundry detergent sheets are just one way they're doing that. By choosing Tru Earth, you're not only choosing a better way to do your laundry, but you're also contributing to a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone. So why not give Tru Earth laundry detergent sheets a try and experience the difference for yourself? Your clothes (and the planet) will thank you for it!
