Ingredients

EcoEgg is not very open about the ingredients used in its products. This is not required but it gives us some transparency about the ingredients used in their products.

  • Anionic surfactants > 30%: This is a group of surfactants that includes sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate, and carboxylates. But as it is not specified it could be anything like sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are usually also the foaming ingredients and these surfactants are sensitive to water hardness meaning the harder the water the more you need for the same cleansing power.

  • Non-ionic surfactants > 5% - 15%: This group of surfactants is effective at reducing surface tension and removing oils and grease, making them useful as a cleaning agent. This type of surfactant tends to be less irritating and has lower toxicity compared to anionic surfactants.

  • Sodium carbonate > 11 %: This is washing soda that helps to remove oils and grease.

  • Sodium metasilicate > 11 %: This is a water softener meaning it removes minerals and metals from hard water and increases the effectiveness of the surfactants used.

  • Calcium carbonate > 10%: This is what eggshells are made of and is a naturally occurring mineral and is often used as a scrubbing agent.

EcoEgg is more open about what is not in its products. The EcoEgg case holds pellets free from harsh chemicals and microplastics, like palm oil, SLS, SLES, parabens, enzymes, and phosphates. Its non-biological formula has been rigorously tested on people with delicate skin and has received an "excellent" rating from Dermatest. Our fragranced options, available in Fresh Linen and Spring Blossom scents, contain low levels of fragrance to minimize the risk of skin irritation. For those with extremely sensitive skin, they recommend their Fragrance-Free Laundry Egg.

But that's not all - the eco-friendliness extends to the packaging as well. The cardboard used for packaging is FSC approved from sustainable sources, and the vegetable-based inks used in printing contain no petrochemicals.

Does the EcoEgg work?

Ecoegg was tested by creating stains on several white reusable baby wipes. The stains that were created were tomato wine and grass as these are known to leave very stubborn stains that are hard to remove.

  • Tomato Stain: The tomato stain left an orange stain on the fabric but there was no tomato small left.

  • Grass Stain: After washing with the EcoEgg, there was a clear grass stain still visible. There was not dirt or grass smell left after washing.

  • Wine Stain: Wine was removed best of all the strains created. There was a faint circle still visible on the wipe but there was no smell of anything detected.

Overall I had higher hopes of the ecoegg removing stains but big brand laundry detergents also have difficulty removing these stains.

How much does the EcoEgg cost?

The biggest investment for the EcoEgg is the initial costs as you need to purchase the case once so you can refill it in the future. This initial purchase will set you back about $16. This case with pellets can be used for about 70 loads of laundry meaning it will cost about $0.23 per load. When you have used up your initial pellet, a refill will set you back about $10 which is good for 50 loads. This means a load is about $0.20.

How do you know when Ecoegg needs refilling?

Keeping your clothes clean and fresh has never been easier thanks to the EcoEgg Laundry Egg. But, how often do you need to refill it? Well, on average, you can expect to refill your EcoEgg Laundry Egg every 2 months, which is approximately 7-10 weeks. However, this period may vary depending on a few factors. Firstly, it will depend on whether you are using the initial 70-wash egg or 50-wash refills. Secondly, the frequency of your laundry loads will also play a role. Lastly, the type of washing machine cycle you typically use will impact how quickly the pellets are used up. So, while the timing may differ for everyone, one thing is for sure - with the EcoEgg Laundry Egg, you can have clean clothes while still being environmentally conscious.

Can you use EcoEgg laundry detergent on cloth diapers?

Their website states nothing about the use of EcoEgg on cloth diapers. Therefore, I don’t recommend it. Eco-friendly detergents are known to have less cleaning power compared to big-brand detergents. For your clothes that got a bit dusty or sweaty from wearing, the EcoEgg will work fine but cloth diapers are much dirtier.

If cloth diapers are not cleaned properly, this dirt may build up over time which not only impacts the absorption of your diapers but also may affect your baby's skin. Therefore I recommend a different detergent for your cloth diapers.

Does it work in cold water?

Yes, the Ecoegg Laundry Detergent is designed to work in cold water as well as hot water. It's a unique laundry solution that uses natural mineral pellets to clean your clothes effectively without the need for harsh chemicals or high temperatures. This makes it a great option for those who want to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint by using cold water washes. The Ecoegg Laundry Detergent has been tested and proven to work just as effectively in cold water as it does in hot water, so you can rest assured that your clothes will come out clean and fresh no matter what temperature you choose.

Is it septic tank safe?

Yes, the Ecoegg Laundry Detergent is safe to use with septic tanks. It does not contain any harsh chemicals that could harm the septic system or the environment. Additionally, the Ecoegg Laundry Detergent is designed to be biodegradable and environmentally friendly, which means that it is less likely to contribute to pollution and damage to the ecosystem.

Is it vegan?

At Ecoegg, they understand that finding vegan-friendly products can be a challenge. They are proud to say that they are a completely animal-friendly brand and they never test on animals. With their eco-friendly Laundry Egg, you can now have a clean conscience while doing your laundry. The Laundry Egg offers a vegan-friendly laundry solution that doesn't compromise on effectiveness. You no longer have to choose between doing what's right for the animals and getting clean clothes.

What are the white pellets?

The white mineral pellets are made up of biodegradable surfactants. These are the pellets that do most of the actual cleaning.

What are the black pellets?

The dark grey mineral pellets are tourmaline. This help to do the softening of the laundry.

What to do with used pellets?

Simply place them in your general waste bin once you're done with them. While the ingredients used in the pellets are biodegradable and non-toxic, they don't recommend putting them in your compost. They haven't tested the effect of the pellets on wildlife and plants, so it's best to err on the side of caution.

EcoEgg Laundry Detergent review

In conclusion, the Ecoegg Laundry Detergent is an innovative and sustainable solution to the traditional laundry detergents that we've been using for years. Not only is it eco-friendly and hypoallergenic, but it's also incredibly cost-effective and easy to use. By switching to the Ecoegg Laundry Detergent, you can reduce your environmental impact and take a step towards a cleaner and greener future. So, what are you waiting for?
