4 Awesome Sustainable Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes have become a massive hit over the past years, thanks to their convenience and offerings. And let us face it – we all love cosmetics and household items delivered to our doorstep as well as trying out new things.

Luckily, sustainable subscription boxes combine two awesome things – a sustainable approach to the environment and exceptional deliverable items.

The sustainable subscription services listed below offer various prepayment plans which can be tailored according to your needs, eco-friendly packaging, and items that are sustainable, environmentally friendly, and, very often, vegan (or at least beegan).

So, let us take a look what they are:

Kinder beauty

Monthly from $23,-

Kinder beauty box offers products that are cruelty-free, vegan, and clean. The products inside the box can be skincare, haircare, makeup, body products, and/or accessories.

Moreover, 1% of all sales goes back to some charities, such as ASPCA, Farm Sanctuary, Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation, Catskills Animal Sanctuary, and Compassion Over Killing, to name just a few.

The box is made from 100% recycled materials and is both biodegradable and compostable. The packing materials inside the box are also made from 100% recycled materials, and the ink used to print the logo and designs on the outside of the box is an eco-friendly soy-based ink. When it comes to the individual product packaging, many of the brands whose products are sent in a box use only eco-friendly materials. Moreover, Kinder Beauty has awesome shipping rates for everyone around the world.

Earthlove

Quaterly from $59.95

Earthlove is a seasonal subscription box filled with eco-conscious goods for leading a holistic, more earth-centered life. Each box contains 6-8 full-size items in each box, spanning different categories like snacks, teas, books, wildcrafting, wellness, apothecary, aromatherapy, beauty, outdoor, gardening, home decor, apparel, accessories, and more. They curate four boxes per year (one each quarter).

They source ethically responsible products, including which have zero-waste packaging, natural ingredients, and are cruelty-free, organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, beegan/vegan, and fair-trade. Earthlove also supports artisans, makers, and small businesses in the US & Canada.

Earthlove is a "beegan" box, meaning that everything is vegan except for bee and insect products sourced from ethical farmers, but there is a full vegan option. If you would like a vegan-only box, then select "vegan" on the product page.

Earthlove is not completely plastic-free since some vendors use post-consumer recycled plastic for their items, and they want to encourage a more closed-loop system for plastics. However, they promise they will always aim to curate products that come in plastic-free packaging first (e.g., glass, sugar cane resin, biodegradable packaging) when possible. In addition, all plastics in the box are 100% recyclable.

The vast majority of products are sustainable: ingredients that are good for us and good for the planet. In the rare event that there is something made in a lab listed among ingredients for a product, it must be toxic-free or present due to ethical reasons (e.g., sourcing it naturally is unsustainable or supports child labor).

The packaging is eco-friendly as well; they partnered with Nashville Wraps for eco-friendly recyclable, sustainable crinkle shred and tissues and Eco Enclose to use 100% post-consumer and post-industrial packaging and the world's first truly sustainable, renewable, biodegradable algae-derived printing ink on the box. Unfortunately, soy-based and water-based inks are still not 100% renewable, chemical-free, or harmless for the environment, and they wanted to ensure that their box has no lasting damage to our planet.

Ecocentric mom

Monthly from $39,99

Ecocentric Mom is a monthly discovery service for busy mothers who want to discover beautiful products from small brands that value organic, natural, eco-friendly, and the less-is-more philosophy.

If you are (or know) a mom or mom-to-be with an interest in being green, living more sustainably, and going toxin-free in all aspects of your life–especially when it comes to your family–than Ecocentric Mom is for you.

Ecocentric Mom is about discovering new, unique brands and products. Their consumers enjoy scouring Etsy and love to #shopsmall to find something exceptional for themselves or as a gift. Ecocentric Moms value small-batch, organic and handmade.

Each month, you will receive 4-6 products or accessories. Box items are tailored to your stage of motherhood and are suited to your bump/baby's age and stage. You can expect to receive items along these lines:

- something pampering: luxury, organic skincare, makeup, or self-care products. A monthly reminder for mama to take care of herself so she can look and feel her best.

- something for bump/baby: bump or baby products and accessories perfectly suited to developmental milestones from mama-to-be's first trimester up through baby's second birthday

- something practical: a green home care item to ensure your nest is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and safe for your growing family

- something yummy: a delicious, non-GMO snack to enjoy (or to share!)

Ecocentric Mom's mission is to introduce moms to products that are not only free from harmful chemicals but also equally effective to their chemical-laden counterparts. There are no single criteria for all selections. Still, they often look to certifications such as USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project, and Leaping Bunny to ensure the included products are safe.

When in doubt, they look to the EWG Skin Deep Database to ensure that no ingredient in any product falls below a safety threshold of '4' on their scale. This means you will not find artificial fragrances, parabens, phthalates, or other "nevers" in any product in your box. You can read more about their criteria for inclusion on our About Us page.
