The kitchen is a great place to start your zero waste journey. Here you find a list with more than 25 tips to make your kitchen a more sustainable place.

Bring reusable containers and bags when you go grocery shopping.

 

Plan your meals and make (and use) a shopping list to prevent impulse buys.

 

Buy in bulk: Lots of foods can be bought in bulk like; herbs and spices, (loose) tea and coffee, nuts and grains, cooking oil and vinegar

 

Buy milk and juice in glass bottles.

 

Buy cheese at the counter and grate your own cheese.

 

Don't buy 2 for 1 if you don’t need it.

 

 

Go grocery shopping without kids.

Grow your own herbs, fruits and vegetables.

 

Preserve your homegrown herbs. 

 

Store leftovers in the freezer (with a label) or refrigerator for next days lunch.

 

Use coffee grind and eggshells to fertilize your garden.

 

Freeze ripe produce that you are unable to use right away. 

 

Use vegetable trimmings to make your own stock or soup.

Make your own spice blends.

 

Use a compost bin for your biodegradable waste.

 

Ditch the plastic wrap and use beeswax wraps or reusable bowl covers.

 

Use reusable tea bags and coffee filters or try another zero waste method (coffee, tea). 

 

Skip the straw or use a reusable one if you really want to use one.

 

Choose unpaper towels instead of paper.

 


Always run a full load of dishes in your dishwasher.

 

Drink tap water instead of bottled water. 

 

Eat vegetarian or vegan more often.

 

 

 

For the meat eaters: 

 

Save the bones (in the freezer) to make your own stock.

 

Buy whole cut meat at the counter when your own container.
